Here’s an email I got from one of my subscribers recently:
“Hey Dan, So a long time ago you told me merchant accounts were the weakest link in the online biz chain…
I took your advice when I first started [business name redacted] and even though I had a good merchant account with good rates, etc.
Right out of the gate — when I went to affiliate summit that year, I made a point to talk to the merchant account guys and eventually got 5 extra accounts.
With Nanacast I could send the majority — something like 60% of the sales through the one good account — and the other percentage through the backups, because their fees + reserves were higher.
(I think they were all high risk accts basically because I had no credit/processing history).
Long story short… I got a couple authorize-net settlement failures last week — never happened before — then a packet of failed transactions in the mail — never happened before — from earlier this month.
Call up that merchant account, turns out my account was closed towards the end of July. From what I could find out — chargebacks were too high — they reached out to find out more about my business/marketing and heard nothing from me so they closed the account. (For the record, I went through
the same process with one of the backups, so if they had reached out I would have done the same.)
Anyways, long story short…
Listen to Dan’s hard won advice, because he knows what he’s talking about — and my business would basically be doing absolutely nothing right now.
And the fact I’m in Chapter 13 bankruptcy right now would mean the chances of quickly getting another merchant account up and running are slim to none.

P.S. How did I know that little secret about multiple merchant accounts?
Because when I had my first home run promotion and my sales volume went up 1,400% practically overnight, my merchant account provider just about had a cow.
I knew right then and there I should ALWAYS have a backup merchant account.
And a backup to the backup. Then a backup to the backup’s backup.
It was an exciting time.
