A story from Joe Zawinul, the leader of the legendary jazz group Weather Report.
When Zawinul met Jaco Pastorius, the first thing out of Jaco’s mouth was…
“My name is John Francis Pastorius III. I’m the greatest bass player in the world.”
Now Zawinul is one of the most luminary figures in jazz. A true legend.
So you’d have to be an incredibly arrogant and delusional person to blurt out something like that to one of the best musicians in the world.
But here’s the thing:
Jaco truly believed it.
And only a few short years later, the rest of the world would believe it, too.
Twenty-nine years after his murder, and the world STILL recognizes Jaco Pastorius as the greatest bass player in the world.
Now here’s my question to you:
If Jaco hadn’t believed that, would the rest of the world believe it?
My experience says a big fat no.
A second question for you:
How did 2015 work out for ya?
Was it as good as you expected?
As bad as you expected?
Or BETTER than you expected?
How would it have worked out had you believed that you were
the greatest [blank] in the world?
Ya know, I heard all kinds of trite little sayings for years. Stuff like “whether you believe you can or you can’t, you’re right.”
And other stuff like that.
But I never believed it.
For me.
For others, yes. But not for me.
Until fairly recently.
I was blind but now I see.
(Totally sucks that it took me damn near 5 decades to figure this out.)
But I have no delusions of grandeur. I’m just a dude with a piss poor education from the Barberton Public School system.
So if I can make all kinds of amazing stuff happen, I don’t have a single doubt in my mind that YOU can, too.
Actually probably better.
Here are those two things you need to make sure your 2016 kicks ass.
Do whatever it takes to believe a big audacious statement about yourself like Jaco Pastorious.
Then make a decision to make it come true.
That’s it. It doesn’t need to be any more complicated than that.
This existence is really just The Matrix. The world reflects back to you what you believe about yourself.
So if your world sucks, you’re 100% responsible.
And if your world rocks, you’re 100% responsible.
It’s as simple as that.
No credentials, “annointing” or approval from others required.
Annoint yourself.
When we meet one day, I’m looking forward to hearing you say…
“My name is [your name]. I’m the greatest [blank] in the world.”
