Let me introduce you to a guy named SWIM. (Someone Who Isn’t Me.)
SWIM has cervical, thoracic and lumbar spinal stenosis.
That means that the holes in his vertebrae (the ones where the nerves from the spinal cord go through) are calcifying and closing up… and putting direct pressure on the nerves.
According to SWIM, this causes indescribable pain.
And even nerve damage that causes muscular imbalances and strength loss.
In the case of his lumbar stenosis, the hole in his vertebrae that the entire frickin’ SPINAL CORD goes through is closing up.
That’s the absolute worst pain, he tells me.
But good old SWIM… he just keeps keeping on.
I’m amazed at the schedule he keeps.
Works 12-hour days, 6 days a week.
Some days even putting in marathon 16 or 18 hour days.
He still pumps iron 3 days a week, too.
It’s 100% pure agony. But his hope is that it will help slow or possibly stop any further nerve damage and strength loss.
None of his business associates have any idea about all this.
He was even a featured speaker at a top-level marketer’s $30,000/year mastermind
last week.
SWIM showed up with his “game face” on and did his thang. Nobody even suspected he was suffering intense, non-stop chronic pain.
SWIM tells me the most frustrating thing is that nobody understands what he’s dealing with.
And nobody understands the super human amount of effort it takes him to keep doing what he does.
Of course, of the people who DO find out about this problem, everybody has a “cure” for SWIM.
“You gotta stretch it out, man. You’ll be a new man in no time.”
Yeah, right. How the hell do you stretch out a frickin’ BONE, ya bonehead?
“Stop eating grains. That lowers inflammation. And take {insert ANY supplement here.}”
SWIM didn’t even so much as LOOK at a grain for 18 months. The disease progressed.
And supplements? He has tried them ALL.
Some in even MASSIVE dosages.
He took so much damn fish oil in one 12-month period he grew gills.
What’s my point of all this?
In every adversity lies the seed of an equal or greater benefit.
Yes, SWIM is suffering.
And sadly, suffering in silence.
But SWIM knows that suffering can be used for good.
For example:
SWIM is a copywriter. And Agora recently hired him to write sales copy for people who suffer from pain.
I don’t think there’s a copywriter alive who can write this piece with as much empathy and emotion as SWIM.
And he’s swingin’ for the fences.
He’s predicting (if the damn legal department will stay outta the way) that this piece will be a breakthrough, grand slam, home run, eclipse-ALL-previous-controls winner.
And I agree.
Now the good folks at Agora have no idea how much pain SWIM is suffering. (SWIM does a good job of putting on his game face.)
They just know he’s a badass copywriter who can write copy that pulls in millions.
So they have no idea what a super smart thing it was to hire him to write this pain piece.
You see, SWIM knows the secret of the most successful copywriters who ever lived.
And he’s using it in this promo.
His copy will be IMBUED with something powerful.
Yet intangible.
Something B-level writers don’t even know exists.
Or worse, don’t believe exists.
But THAT is a topic I will not share with civilians. It’s just too damn powerful to put in the hands of rookies.
It’s reserved ONLY for the knights in my Marketing Camelot.
Look, if you’re suffering from any kind of emotional, psychological or physical pain…
… or if you’re suffering from any kind of illness…
…I’m truly sorry.
I hope you have SOMEBODY you can talk to about it. (Life sucks when you feel like you’re all alone with your problems.)
But here’s an idea you may not have thought about:
How can you use or leverage your personal suffering into something that will help others?
Yeah, of course it’s great to help others.
Duh, right?
But I think you may find that you help yourself, too.
For example, SWIM laid in bed last night, suffering silently for hours, unable to sleep because of the pain.
So he finally got up out of bed at [3:04] AM and started writing an email to share with his list. (He has a list of the most wonderful people. They like to hear from him often with tips about how to improve their lives.)
During the 33 minutes and 33 seconds he invested writing the email for his list… he got “in the zone.”
Now the pain doesn’t go away while he’s in the zone.
It’s just that SWIM is 100% focused on something he’s passionate about… helping others.
And when he’s in the zone and focused on his passion… the pain seems to become… well… more bearable.
Maybe you should give it a try, too.
After all… who knows…
Maybe while you’re in the process of temporarily making your physical or emotional pain a bit more more bearable…
…even if it’s something as simple as writing an email…
…you may be creating something that relieves the physical and/or emotional pain of a fellow human being.
And that kinda makes all your pain and suffering seem a bit more bearable, doesn’t it?
P.S. BIG changes coming to the Marketing Camelot.
