I have a confession. I played a little prank on you. I did it last night. While you were sleeping, I sneaked into your room and Chloroformed you. Yeah, yeah, I did that. You don’t remember it, but I did that. And while you were flying with the angels, your consciousness completely disconnected from your body. I implanted these special lenses in your eyes. Now, these lenses let you see everything exactly how it is. With one small exception. These lenses have this small yellow filter in one spot in both eyes. So everything you look at, it appears to have this yellow stain. So when you woke up, they’re lying in your bed. You saw a yellow stain on the ceiling. You thought, I must have a leak in my roof. I’ll have to get that checked out. So then you walked into the bathroom and you looked in the mirror, at least, I’m assuming that’s what you did.

After you woke up and you said to yourself, geez, this mirror needs clean. There’s some kind yellow stain, right? My line of sight, where’s the Windex? Right? So you sprayed Windex, scrubbed the mirror about 50 different times, but that yellow stain just stayed there. Wow. No matter what I do, that yellow stain just won’t go away. It must be something within the mirror. I guess I’ll just have to replace the mirror. Then you walked into the kitchen to make some coffee. I guess my wife or kids must have spilled something on the countertop. Look at that yellow stain there. So you spray the countertop cleaner on that stain. About a hundred times you scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed until your hand was cramped. Yet that stain remained. So you thought to yourself, I guess that stains permanent. It looks like I’m going to have to replace the countertop too.

And so as you walked out the door, you looked at the wall, there was a yellow stain there. So what’d you do? You grabbed the pine saw and you scrubbed away at that yellow stain for almost an hour. This is weird. You think to yourself, no matter how hard I work at it, these yellow stains never go away. So now everywhere you go, everything you look at, it’s all stained. And with you being a tad bit OCD, like most entrepreneurs are, it’s driving you crazy and you try to clean off this stain on darn near everything, right? But no matter how hard you work at it, no matter which cleaning product you use, no matter which cleaning technique you use, the stains just won’t go away. Out damn spot. You shout, and I think to myself, my how well read you are, but that positive thinking, name it and claim the stuff that doesn’t work either.

Everything is still stained, so you make one final appeal. You contact the big guy upstairs, God, please, I implore you with all my heart and soul clean these stains away, yet the stains remain. And now you blame God because the situation looks hopeless and you feel deeply, deeply depressed. Why would I play such a cruel trick on you? The answer is simple. My revered, I usually say revered reader, but I guess I say my revered viewer. It was to teach you a lesson. You see, there’s nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing you can do to get rid of those stains. Nothing, honey, because you’ve been seeking the solution in the wrong place. You’ve been seeking a solution outside of yourself. But the thing causing the problem is internal. And until you fix that, nothing external is ever, ever, ever going to work. Which is why I say that running a business is really the best self-improvement program in existence because you are forced to fix the internal stuff and the internal problems if you want to break through your plateaus.
