I went to the Potter’s house.
Bowing, I said, “Master Potter, I want to create something magnificent.”
He said not a word. With a wave of His hand, He invited me to sit on the stool in front of his potter’s wheel.
He plopped a lump of clay on the wheel and turned it on. He took my hands into his, placed them on the clay and applied a slight pressure. As soon as I started working the clay, He left the room.
And I turned a formless lump of clay into a misshapen, ugly lump of clay.
The Potter returned. Seeing the results of my work He said not a word.
He took my misshapen, ugly lump of clay off the potter’s wheel and placed a new lump of clay in its place. He turned on the wheel, took my hands into his, placed them on the clay and applied a slight pressure.
Again, as soon as I started working the clay, He left the room.
This happened time after time.
In spite of my intention and effort, I fell short of my goal to “create something magnificent.” Instead, I produced nothing but misshapen, ugly lumps of clay.
After seeing my assortment of misshapen, ugly lumps of clay… and my disappointment and frustration… the Potter looked into my eyes, smiled and said…
“My son, if you will ask, I will create something magnificent WITH you.”
Then He plopped a lump of clay on the wheel… turned it on… placed my hands on the clay… and He directed my hands.
And we created something magnificent.
All the best,
