I don't know anything about the guy or his reputation. I just got a lot of value out of his Value Based Copywriting product.

Yeah, that's who I meant. I've heard some not so great things about him. But I didn't want to dime him out because I wasn't sure if the rumors were true. Based on your comments Dan, they probably weren't.

There are a lot of false copywriting prophets on the web today. There are also plenty of shitballs badmouthing the good guys just to get some traffic to their site. Thanks for clearing things up about Harlan, Dan.

Oh yeah. Duh! I can be so clueless at times.

I've only met Harlan once. It was at one of those "pitch fest" seminars put on by two goo-roos in San Diego a few years ago. He probably doesn't even remember me.

I have a DVD course by Harlan called "Value Based Copywriting" and I got a LOT of value out of it. It was actually responsible for what I'd say was a life-changing "attitude adjustment". It has helped me overcome a lot of the poverty mindset issues I had ingrained in me for years when I was a kid.

I owe Harlan a big hug and a thank you whenever I see him in person again. Although he doesn't really strike me as a "hugs guy" so maybe I just better stick to a hearty handshake. :)

Dan,

I think Donner just has good taste, forget the reflection. I never could stand Neil Young's voice and when he joined Crosby, Still & Nash, he took them down in my eyes. Or "ears" I suppose would be more accurate.

As for the goo roos, I couldn't agree more. A solid tipoff for me is when a guy who claims to make big bucks on the Internet sends me an email pushing some other goo roo's product. And a week later, another. I stop and think, if this guy's really got a million dollar business going, why is he an affiliate for 10 other guys who are all just cross-selling each other's pie-in-the-sky get-rich-quick junk?

And speaking of affiliates, most of the gurus will tell you you don't need to know squat about a product or the subject to market it as an affiliate. There are people selling dog training books who have never had or trained a dog! Books that may have been ghost written by some young freelancer overseas who has never had or trained a dog. Now THAT one makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck! And pardon me if I'm growling and barking thinking about it.

Probably wouldn't be a good idea. As Michel and Sylvie Fortin say, "focus on the sin, not the sinner."

I have a standing joke with my mastermind group about this particular guru. He brags about the same two things in almost every issue of his newsletter... and one of them has nothing to do with copywriting. He has mentioned it so many times it's pretty funny. I alluded to it in a recent tweet. If you're following me on Twitter, you might pick up on it.
